I purchased this black and white oil painting in an antique store on a recent trip to New England.
It is signed “Sybil”, but I could not find enough information through internet searches to disambiguate which Sybil the artist might be?
The painting is titled: “Study in Black & White”. The overall perspective seems, to me, to have a fractured point of view. For example, the candlestick seems to be viewed from multiple perspectives and the whole still life is in a strange juxtaposition with a 1962 clipping from the masthead of the conservative French newspaper “Le Figaro”. It looks like it was done very quickly and conveys an emotionally heavy feeling.
The painting is very interesting, and I am wondering if anyone recognizes this painting or knows anything about the artist? Also, I would be very interested in interpretations of the piece. Please feel free to comment.
